As an estate planning attorney, you can be of great service to the cause of your choice. Your involvement can start with forming a planned giving committee for a charity you support and then helping that committee clearly define the role that it is to play. Initially, committee members will need to understand the purpose of the charity, how bequest dollars are used, and what funds are needed to meet future goals. Historically, planned giving committees were composed of lawyers, trust officers, CPAs and life underwriters. Today, committees have expanded to include financial advisors, real estate agents, donors and others.
